Welcome to Menlo Park - Atherton Troop 109!

Celebrating our 72nd year, Boy Scouts of America Troop 109 serves Menlo Park, Atherton, Redwood City, and the surrounding communities.  The scout-led troop is not affiliated with a religious organization, and focuses on diversity, inclusiveness, leadership, and independence. 

Troop 109 is unique in being the "ideal size" for scouts at all levels. With about 35 scouts, T109 is small enough to provide individualized attention to the needs of each scout. With 3-4 patrols, T109 is large enough for leadership opportunities and development. Scouts are supported in the acquisition of skills and advancement, with many achieving Eagle rank.

Activities (such as hiking, overnight camping and backpacking, white water rafting, orienteering, community service, etc.) occur at least once a month. Families may be included in activities, whenever possible. T109 scouts also have other interests (e.g. jazz band, drama, football, baseball, cross-country, etc.), and are able to balance scouting with all of these, including school work.

Troop 109 meets monthly, usually the 1st Tuesday of each month, at the Hillview Middle School Libary (Menlo Park) from 7:30 to 8:30 pm.

What's New for Troop 109 in 2011-2012?

2011 has been an amazing year for Troop 109. Most notably, two scouts achieved Eagle, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. Three scouts have completed their Eagle Leadership Service Projects, and four to five other scouts are in the midst of their Eagle Projects.

Other 2011 achievements include:

• Eight T109 scouts (along with two adult advisors) completed a 100-mile trek at Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimmaron, New Mexico in July 2011
• Twelve T109 scouts earned 60 merit badges at Camp Wente in August 2011 (averaging 5-6 merit badges per scout)
• For the second year in a row, T109 hiked to the top of Half Dome, using climbing harnesses and carabiners along the way

The highlight of 2010 was the honoring of Troop 109 with the 2010 Environmental Quality Award in the cultural/historical category by Menlo Park's Environmental Quality Commission. These projects at Bedwell Bayfront Park were the result of two T109 Eagle Leadership Service Projects.

Special recognition was given to:

• Life Scout Daniel K. who led the installation of 53 posts for a self-guided tour of the rock sculptures that make up The Great Spirit Path, designed by artist Susan C. Dunlap
• Life Scout Philipp K. who organized a team of volunteers to create a permanent orienteering course in the park, supported by a generous grant from the Bay Area Orienteering Club. Click here for more information and maps on the new Bedwell Bayfront Orienteering Course.

Other main achievements in 2010 were:

• Orienteering activities of T109 were featured in the March 2010 issue of Boys' Life magazine
• Two T109 scouts hiked 227 miles along the John Muir Trail, culminating in climbing 14,000 foot Mount Whitney
• T109 scouts successfully hiked to the top of Half Dome and Clouds Rest (Yosemite) in June
• Fourteen T109 scouts went to Camp Oljato and earned 59 merit badges
• T109 hiked the beautiful 20-mile Skyline-to-the Sea Trail in May 2010
• Eight T109 scouts went to National Youth Leadership Training as part of their leadership development

T109 is looking forward to many more fun, exciting, and challenging activities this year.
