New Orienteering Course on San Francisco Peninsula!!
Bedwell Bayfront Park, Menlo Park
This permanent orienteering course was created as an Eagle Scout Project by Philipp Kopisch from Boy Scout Troop 109. It was made possible by support from the Bay Area Orienteering Club, the City of Menlo Park, the Friends of Bedwell Bayfront Park, and many members of Troop 109.
There are 3 separate courses at Bedwell Bayfront Park, graded by difficulty
- WHITE Course: easiest White Course Map
- YELLOW Course: challenging Yellow Course Map
- ORANGE Course: most challenging Orange Course Map
There is also a Master Map that shows all the controls without a prescribed course. This can be used to design your own course.
Other Permanent Orienteering Courses can be found through the Bay Area Orienteering Club, a supporter of this project.
What Is Orienteering?
Orienteering requires navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and often unfamiliar terrain. Especially-prepared topographical maps show where "control points" are located, and participants begin at the "start point," reach each designated control point in sequential order, and finish the course at the "stop point." Often, there is a race against the clock or other participants. Competitions are opportunities to test the navigational skills, concentration, and running abilities of participants. Difficulty of courses vary based on distances, elevations, and terrain. Maps may change over time to keep the courses "fresh."
Much more information can be found through the Bay Area Orienteering Club.
Who Is Philipp Kopisch?

Philipp is a local and national champion in Orienteering and has been exceling in this since he was a boy. He is a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 109, a member of the Order of the Arrow (honor society for Boy Scouts), and runs on his high school cross country team. Completion of this permanent orienteering course project was an important step on Philipp's path to becoming an Eagle Scout. For this, Philipp received special recognition by Menlo Park's Environmental Quality Commission and was honored with the 2010 Environmental Quality Award. All of these make Philipp a tough competitor in the field of Orienteering.
